Curriculum Development in New Media - Semester 1
Class: Mondays 4-7pm

SYLLABUS
January 26
Conversation:
Registration. Studio Overview. Class Overview.
K-12 New Media Project Overview - Technology in the Classroom.
Technique:
Create people identity web pages for members of the class using ID template form.
Link them to the class site. In to Do While Labs.
Assignment:
Bring to class your chosen external storage device. Do While supports: -
floppy disks, zip disks, syquest, and external hard drives.
Read and familiarize yourself with the Art Curriculum Frameworks.
Prepare a 15 minute presentation addressing some of the following issues:
How does the Frameworks relate to your own art curriculum? Have you found
effective strategies for applying the Frameworks?
Can you link specific project examples from your classroom to specific topics
within the Frameworks?
If you are currently using new media in your classroom, how does it relate to
traditional art issues (i.e.: assignments which focus on line, shape, color,
form, multicultural, interdisciplinary, etc.)?
What areas of the Frameworks do you think might translate well to new media
projects ?(this is a good focus for anyone that has not done a lot of teaching
yet).
What additional guides for using new media in the Frameworks might be helpful?
How specific or general should the language be?

Conversation:
Class Presentations.
Introduction to other On-line Art Curriculum Projects. How can you use these
resources? How do you know if the resource is current? What is their purpose,
who is the audience, and have they been successful? Developing a critical eye
for on-line resources requires you to think like an interface designer. Good
on-line research is a parallel process to curriculum development.
Technique:
Site Development for research purposes. Collecting and managing on-line
resources. Simple tools to browse, bookmark and publish. Intro to HTML.
Assignment:
Read Curriculum Pamphlet.
Start your own Research Site . Bring file to class next week, ready to upload
with your name and email link on each page.

Conversation:
Second Semester Student Presentations
Technique:
Uploading, linking, and updating your own site.
Assignment:
Relate your Research Site to traditional educational models by commenting your
hot links. For example, do any sites use familiar teaching strategies,
methodologies or practices such as Constructivist, Formalist, or
Interdisciplinary models?. Which sites on your list do you think are more
successful than others and why? Begin to organize and categorize your links
in ways that make best sense to you.

Conversation:
Building Content: Creative Learning in New Media -- Part 1
How the computer works
2D Image Manipulation - making/changing meaning
Technique:
Open Lab experimentation of different new media tools, techniques. Do these
new media techniques change the way we are creative?
Assignment:
Create a 20 minute classroom "project" introducing the computer to an art
classroom -- use any traditional or new media tools. Be prepared to use the
members of our class as your students.

Each student presents their classroom "project" to the class.
Building Content: Creative Learning in New Media -- Part 2
2D - 3D Transformation
Time Based Media - animation, motion
Non-linear Time Based Media - multimedia
Technique:
Open Lab experimentation of different new media tools, techniques. Do these
new media techniques change the way we are creative?
Assignment:
Create a 20 minute classroom "project" which extends a traditional art
classroom exercise -- using any new media tool or present an idea that is made
possible by these new tools. Be prepared to use the members of our class as
your students.

HTML continued. Preparing graphics for the Internet
Assignment:
Create a 20 minute classroom "project" using the Internet as a tool in the
classroom. Be prepared to use the members of our class as your students.

Conversation:
Each student presents their classroom "project" to the class.
Discussion about each "project" and how they relate to the Curriculum
Frameworks, and how they could be appropriate or modified for different grade
levels and facilities.
Technique:
Introduction to on-line Curriculum Frameworks, on-line curriculum templates,
design spreadsheets. HTML Table and Frames
Assignment:
Link Curriculum Frameworks to your projects
April 6
Conversation:
Present projects to class.
Lecture: Designing for the Screen - designing for the medium, designing for
your audience. Information Design in a nutshell.
Lecture: Interface Design and Project Management - The Difference between
Information and Knowledge.
Assignment:
Begin Final Projects
